The national flag of Cyprus, known as "Kıbrıs bayrağı" in Turkish and "Ελληνική σημαία της Κύπρου" in Greek, is a symbol of the nation's independence and cultural heritage.
Design and Symbolism
The Cypriot flag features a white background with a copper-colored silhouette of the island in the center. The silhouette represents the geographical shape of Cyprus and its prominent copper mining industry.
Below the silhouette are two crossed olive branches, one green and one gold, representing peace and harmony between the Greek and Turkish communities of Cyprus.
History and Adoption
The Cypriot flag was adopted on August 16, 1960, after the island gained independence from British colonial rule. The design was created by a committee appointed by the then-President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III.
The colors and symbols of the flag were chosen to represent the aspirations of a unified and peaceful Cyprus. The white background symbolizes peace and unity, while the olive branches represent harmony between the two main ethnic groups of the island.
Usage and Protocol
